2026 in Review: The Magnificent Seven Stopped Moving as One

Apple up nearly 28%, Tesla down 17%: the seven stocks that carried the market became seven very different bets. Our year-end letter on what that split means if your wealth sits in just one of them.

A fortnightly letter on concentrated wealth

The short version

Did the Magnificent Seven stocks all go up in 2026?

No. Through Oct. 23, Apple was up 27.9% and Nvidia 13.1%, while Meta fell 2.6% and Tesla 17.2%, a 45-point gap between best and worst. As a weighted group the seven gained about 9.7%, trailing the other 493 S&P 500 companies at about 12.3%. Owning one of them was a very different year from owning the index.

This fortnight in four lines

  • 01The best-to-worst gap inside the Mag 7 was 45.1 points (Apple +27.9%, Tesla −17.2%, through Oct. 23).
  • 02The equal-weight S&P 500 (RSP) rose 13.0%, ahead of the cap-weighted index's 11.4%.
  • 03J.P. Morgan found that 54% of stocks that later suffered catastrophic declines were profitable at their peak.
  • 04For 2027, the question for a single-stock holder isn't whether it will go up. It's what happens if yours is the one that doesn't.

Seven stocks, seven different years

From 2023 through 2025 the Magnificent Seven traded almost as a single asset: buy the AI trade, get all seven. In 2026 the group came apart. By late October Apple was up nearly 28% and Tesla was down 17%. Meta slipped into the red. The distance between the best and the worst was 45.1 percentage points.

Even the leaders spent time underwater. At points this autumn Nvidia sat about 13% below its all-time high and Tesla 26% below, as investors questioned how quickly hyperscalers' heavy AI spending, increasingly funded with debt, would pay back.

The "boring" 493 beat the famous seven

Here is the twist for anyone who assumes their mega-cap is the safe bet. Weighted by size, the Mag 7 gained about 9.7% through Oct. 23. The other 493 companies in the S&P 500 gained about 12.3%, and the equal-weight index, which gives every company the same slice, did best of all.

The lesson isn't that the seven are bad companies. It's that owning one of them is not owning the market. In a year like this, a holder of Apple and a holder of Tesla had opposite experiences of the same "AI trade."

The stocks that fall hardest often look healthiest first

J.P. Morgan has tracked concentrated-stock risk for over a decade in its Agony & Ecstasy series. Its headline finding: roughly 40% of Russell 3000 stocks since 1980 suffered a "catastrophic" decline, a fall of 70% or more from peak that was never recovered.

The 2024 update looked at who those decliners were at their peak, and it is not reassuring for anyone who trusts fundamentals to warn them. 54% were profitable and 63% had modest leverage (net debt under 2x EBITDA). Most traded at "reasonable" forward P/E multiples, and Wall Street consensus at the peak leaned heavily to buy ratings. Moderna, PayPal, Estée Lauder and Silicon Valley Bank are on the list.

How deep is the hole, and how long to climb out?

Losses and gains are not symmetric. Move the slider to see what a decline does to your position and how long it takes to recover at a steady growth rate.

Gain needed = L ÷ (1 − L). Years = ln(1 ÷ (1 − L)) ÷ ln(1 + growth). Catastrophic decliners, by definition, never recover.

Make the stock pay you while you decide

Nobody can tell you in December whether your stock will be next year's Apple or next year's Tesla. What you can control is whether the position produces cash in the meantime. Embark takes appreciated shares as an in-kind §721 contribution, so no tax is due at contribution, and runs income strategies on them that target 10%+ a year.

That income is a cushion and a funding source: it can pay for diversification, a home or a tax bill without forcing a sale at a bad moment. It is not a hedge; the stock's downside remains, income can fall short of target, and in a big rally the strategy can trail the stock. Embark is offered to verified accredited investors only.

Dates concentrated holders should mark now

  • January: the 20% long-term bracket thresholds reset with 2027 inflation adjustments. A sale planned for early January lands in a new tax year.
  • After SpaceX's Q4 results: the first extended-investor release, up to 351.9 million shares, followed by staged releases through mid-2027.
  • 2027 FOMC: one of the Fed's eight meetings will be strategy-only, with no rate vote, so the remaining decisions carry more weight.
  • June 12, 2027: Elon Musk's roughly 6.4 billion SpaceX shares come off lockup.

That's the last Dispatch of 2026. Thank you for reading. We'll be back in January with the year's first look at what the market is doing to positions like yours.

Questions readers ask

Which Magnificent Seven stock did best in 2026?

Through Oct. 23, 2026, Apple led with a 27.9% price gain, followed by Nvidia at 13.1%, Microsoft 8.5%, Amazon 7.4% and Alphabet 2.3%. Meta was down 2.6% and Tesla down 17.2%. The figures exclude dividends.

Did the other 493 S&P 500 stocks beat the Mag 7 in 2026?

Through Oct. 23, yes. Opening Bell Daily's weighted calculation put the other 493 companies up about 12.3%, against about 9.7% for the Mag 7 as a group and 11.4% for the full index.

What is a catastrophic stock decline?

J.P. Morgan defines it as a fall of 70% or more from peak that is not recovered. Its 2014 study found roughly 40% of Russell 3000 stocks since 1980 suffered one, and its 2024 update found many decliners were profitable and well rated at their peak.

How much does a stock need to gain to recover from a 50% loss?

100%. Recovering from a loss of L takes a gain of L divided by (1 − L), so the hole deepens quickly: a 70% loss needs a 233% gain to get back to even.

How can I reduce single-stock risk without a big tax bill?

Common routes include gradual sales spread across tax years, donating shares, hedging with options, exchange funds, and §721 contribution structures such as Embark's, which avoid tax at contribution while targeting income on the position. Each trades off cost, control and liquidity differently.
